Don’t be intimidated by employees who tell you how they want to be managed! This is a blessing and should be every managers’ dream. However, if you’re feeling insecure about your ability to adapt to an employee’s supervision needs, it may not feel good to be informed of how she’d like you to manage her.

If you are having this experience, keep in mind the reasons that it’s actually a wonderful thing for an employee to be able to articulate to you what she needs. Here’s why.

  1. It makes your life is easier. Instead of proceeding in the dark, you have some guidance about how your employee will respond best, what she needs to succeed, and how you can support her in achieving her tasks, which will ultimately help you with your goals.

  2. It means you have a self aware employee. Having an employee who is self aware is an exceptional thing for a manager. This means you have someone who has thought about the circumstances under which she performs best. She wants to succeed and she can guide you to help her do well for the both of you.

So the next time an employee tells you how she wants to be managed, think about it whether or not her requests are possible. If they are, revel in the glory of having an employee who gets herself and knows what she needs to do her best. It’s a special thing to appreciate, and maybe even learn from. Oh, the humility it takes to be a manager!
